Built on a spur of Mont Sant'Egidio and surrounded by powerful walls smoothed down
by centuries and winds, the visitor looks from the top walls to admire one of the widest and
most harmonious views in Italy, the rich and immense Val di Chiana. The medieval city of Cortona
was built upon an ancient Etruscan settlement, in 1538 the town was incorporated into the duchy
of Tuscany. Center of town is the Piazza della Repubblica, with narrow streets and old alleyways
going uphill and downhill. Shown here are some photos of Cortona and the surrounding area. Click on any image for a larger view.
